DUST EXTRACTOR

Dust Extractors
Dust Extractors

I have a Microlean dust extractor above the lathe and an Axminster floor standing extractor. Dust is hazardous and these help to move some of it although I am not sure whether the Microlean also helps to blow the fine dust about as well as collecting some. This is borne out by the discharge from the top of the fan leaving a band of dust at high level on the wall, still I did say something is better than nothing.

The chip extractor is good, in fact excellent but is nonetheless only really designed for larger dust particles so please ensure that you have something to catch the smaller particles –they are the ones that will do you the most damage. A cautionary note, do not just switch on the dust extractor or use a mask whilst you are using abrasives. I have seen many people do just that and switch it off straight away afterwards. The dust that has been generated is airborne and can take up to 2 days or so to settle so immediately switching off or removing your respirator is not a good idea.
